Anonymous figures, soldiers, athletes, workers and boys, appear caught between performance and vulnerability. They inhabit landscapes punctuated by watchtowers, domes, arches and floodlights, evoking fantasies of progress, power and permanence. Shifts between the miniature and the monumental suggest a human impulse to build, commemorate and outlast oneself, at once grandiose and precarious.
I am increasingly concerned with the image as a physical object, working directly with etched copper plates alongside painted and drawn surfaces. My sculptures extend this approach through illuminated structures and enclosures recalling altarpieces, reliquaries and wayside shrines. Across these forms, I am interested in how private feeling becomes public iconography, and how ordinary materials and architectural forms acquire ritual, memorial and mythic significance.
William Lowry (b. 2001) is an artist based in London. He holds an MFA in Fine Art with Distinction from the Slade School of Fine Art and a First Class BFA from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. Recent exhibitions include RBA Rising Stars at the Royal Over-Seas League, the East Wing Biennial at The Courtauld, and Beyond the Pale at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford.
Lowry has received the Bartolomeu dos Santos Memorial Award, Euan Uglow Scholarship, Max Werner Drawing Prize and Hermione Hammond Drawing Award, alongside the Vivien Leigh Prize, Emery Prize and Peter Kirk Travel Scholarship. He has undertaken residencies in Germany and Italy.
